In late model cars, the check engine light will behave differently depending on the seriousness of the problem. If your check engine light starts blinking or turns red, the issue is so critical that immediate attention is needed. A steady check engine light indicates that a non emergency exists and should be checked out as soon as possible. Whatever you do, do not take your car to an auto parts store when the check engine light goes on. Auto parts shop employees are not qualified to do anything beyond interpreting the trouble codes.
